Job purpose
This post is responsible for providing in-depth knowledge as part of the organisation’s strategic thinking, learning and influence in the field of Resilience and Humanitarian Response. Working closely with the Thematic Lead (Head of Advisory), the post is responsible for managing specialist technical advisory support to the rest of the organisation in their thematic area, ensuring the creation and maintenance of external relationships in the field of Resilience and Humanitarian Response, supporting and, when appropriate, guiding business development in this field and ensuring that the organisation becomes increasingly respected for its practice, evidence and impact.
Key responsibilities and accountabilities
Advisory
Ensuring the best learning, research and technical advice is made available across the organisation, prioritised according to need. This will include capacity strengthening, ensuring relevant expertise is available to country teams, publishing insights from organisational practice and evolving the organisation’s approaches in these areas.
Business Development
Supporting and where appropriate guiding the development of external international donor and other business development relationships specific to one or more of the organisation’s thematic portfolios, exploring and generating business development opportunities, and supporting, and when relevant directing, the development of cross institutional proposals specific to the theme.
Evidence
Supporting the development and delivery of an evidence generation strategy sufficient to improve the organisation’s reputation within specific thematic areas for its own evidence and impact, as well as the broader reputation of the role of communication. This will involve working with Researchers.
External Policy Engagement
Working in close consultation with the Thematic Lead (Head of Advisory), the post supports the organisation’s external evidence-based policy engagement in this field. This will involve building the institutional reputation of the organisation and its influence in deploying its own experience, insight and evidence to inform and help shape donor and development strategies in one or more of the organisation’s focus areas.

Manages a relevant thematic adviser (where appropriate), including taking decisions on work priorities, external engagements, thematic strategies and approaches.

Additional job specific responsibilities and accountabilities
This post will provide leadership to further BBC Media Action’s strategies and support on the area of economic security and opportunity.
The ideal candidate will bring knowledge, expertise and leadership on how media and communication in a development context or humanitarian crisis can best support individuals, households and communities in the following areas: employment, self-employment and entrepreneurship, job skills, including soft skills, technical and vocational education and training, financial literacy, cash transfers and social protection schemes, and labour rights and governance issues related to economic security.
Knowledge, understanding and experience of how media and communication can achieve impact in these areas with an approach sensitive to climate change and the environment, the impact of COVID and related restrictions, and among marginalised groups, including women and girls, young people, and migrants would be a particular advantage.
Key responsibilities:
Play a lead role engaging with influential external stakeholders about the potential of media and communication for economic security and BBC Media Action’s offer. This will involve representing BBC Media Action externally (through high-level meetings and public presentations), forging relationships with major external partners, stakeholders and funding bodies.
Skills, knowledge and experience:
Extensive experience of working with media and communication for economic security and opportunity among individuals, households and communities.
Strong understanding of the international development system, particularly in relation to building economic security and opportunity among marginalised groups.
Knowledge and understanding of how media and communication can achieve impact on economic security outcomes.
Capacity to exercise intellectual leadership on economic security and opportunity and experience of engaging with relevant external research, practice and policy agendas at a high level, linking these creatively to the programming and thinking of BBC Media Action.
Extensive contacts and high-level networking ability within the fields of economic security.
Safeguarding
Understand and comply with the Safeguarding policy and the staff Code of Conduct.
Participate in relevant mandatory training on Safeguarding and Respect at Work.
Report any Safeguarding concerns immediately, either to the Country Director, or using the Whistleblowing Policy.
Incorporate relevant safeguarding issues as part of training, support, documents and advice to project teams on working with children and vulnerable adults.
Ensure that freelancers contracted are detailed on the central register of approved trainers, suitably trained on Safeguarding and Respect at Work, fully briefed on the staff code of conduct, and that this is adequately documented.
